라이엇 게임즈가 2025년 미드 시즌 인비테이셔널(MSI) 개최지를 캐나다 밴쿠버로 확정했다. 대회는 오는 6월 27일 개막해 7월 12일까지 약 2주간 펼쳐진다.
이번 MSI는 캐나다 밴쿠버의 퍼시픽 콜리세움(Pacific Coliseum)에서 열린다. 해당 경기장은 2010년 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 피겨스케이팅과 쇼트트랙 종목이 열린 곳으로, 한국 팬들에겐 김연아의 금메달 무대로 익숙한 장소다. 또한 2017년 ‘리그 오브 레전드 챔피언십 시리즈 스프링’ 결승전도 개최된 바 있다.
MSI는 ‘LoL 월드 챔피언십’(롤드컵)과 함께 라이엇 게임즈가 주최하는 대표 국제 대회다. 2015년부터 매년 중반에 열리고 있으며, 각 지역 최상위 팀들의 전력을 비교하고 롤드컵 추가 진출권을 놓고 경쟁하는 무대다.
2025 MSI에는 총 5개 지역(LCK, LPL, LEC, LLA, LCS)에서 각각 두 팀씩, 총 10개 팀이 참가한다. 대회 성적에 따라 최고의 성과를 낸 두 팀을 배출한 지역에는 ‘월드 챔피언십’ 추가 출전권이 부여된다.
라이엇 게임즈는 이번 대회의 총상금을 전년도보다 크게 상향했다. ‘퍼스트 스탠드’ 기자 간담회에서 발표된 내용에 따르면, 2025 MSI 총상금은 약 200만 달러(한화 약 29억 원)로 전년 대비 8배 인상됐다. 아울러 롤드컵 상금도 225만 달러에서 500만 달러(약 70억 원)로 두 배 이상 확대된다.
라이엇 게임즈 LoL 이스포츠 글로벌 총괄 크리스 그릴리(Chris Greeley)는 “지속 가능한 이스포츠 생태계를 만들기 위해 디지털 상품 수익 배분과 같은 구조를 통해 상금 규모 확대를 추진하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
한편, MSI 2025 현장 관람을 원하는 팬들을 위한 티켓 예매는 3월 28일(금)부터 1차, 5월 30일(금)부터 2차 예매가 가능하다. 마스터카드 소지자는 일반 예매일보다 하루 빠른 3월 27일과 5월 29일에 선예매가 제공된다.
